Scientific research on red chili pepper continues to surprise us, as demonstrated by a study published in the “International Journal of Obesity,” which proves that individuals who consume the most red chili pepper are less likely to be overweight. Clinical trials and animal studies have revealed that eating hot red chili pepper contributes to reduced calorie intake by promoting increased energy expenditure.

The properties of hot chili pepper could play a role in preventing obesity. This new study was based on data from the “China Health and Nutrition Survey” (C.H.N.S.), which evaluated the impact of spicy food consumption on overweight and obesity in approximately 12,970 people over about 9 years.

The results were astonishing. For example, the risk of being overweight or obese was reduced by 27% in people who consumed more than 50 g/day of hot red chili pepper compared to those who did not consume it. However, the study does not reveal a direct link between the slimming effect of chili pepper and lower calorie intake. According to the researchers, it is the thermogenic effect of capsaicin that is responsible for the increase in energy expenditure.

Capsaicin, the molecule responsible for the spicy taste of red or green chili pepper, has always been the primary selling point of chili-based slimming products due to its properties that promote thermogenesis.

An Excellent Anti-Cancer Agent

In parallel, according to a study  conducted by researcher Sanjay Srivastava from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, when administered to mice with pancreatic cancer, capsaicin has the effect of killing cancer cells through apoptosis, significantly reducing tumor size.

According to the scientist, the destructive action of capsaicin only targets malignant cells and does not affect healthy cells.

It is worth mentioning that hot chili pepper has always been categorized as a vegetable with multiple benefits, primarily due to its active component, capsaicin, which reduces mortality and the risk of rhinitis while increasing muscle strength. Additionally, paprika, harissa, and other spices are rich in antioxidants and have an alkalizing effect. So, don’t hesitate to incorporate spicy foods into your diet.
